Huawei unveils next-generation sustainable data centers

Huawei says its next-generation data centers will be powered by PowerPOD 3.0, a brand-new power system that cuts its footprint by 40% and energy consumption by 70%.

The company says the new system also shortens delivery times from 2 months to 2 weeks, lowering the SLA error rate by 38%.

Huawei senior vice president Charles Yang says the new facilities have four distinct features that set them apart.

Sustainable

Huawei says the new centers will be completely green and energy efficient while maximizing the recycling of all data center materials. It displays data centers can be sustainable by using green resources – electricity, land, and water – and by optimizing the recycling of used materials throughout the life cycle.

In addition to the widely used Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), other indicators, including Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE), Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), and Grid Usage Effectiveness (GUE), will be used to measure data center sustainability.

Simplified

Huawei says simplified architecture, power supply, and cooling are key features in the new centers. It says that simplified architecture brings innovative forms of buildings and technical spaces. The company says that if the prefabricated modular construction mode is used to build a data center with 1000 racks, the construction period can be shortened from more than 18 months to 6-9 months.

The company says a simplified power supply is reshaping components and connections. It shortens the delivery time from 2 months to 2 weeks. It says simplified cooling maximizes heat exchange efficiency by turning multiple heat exchanges into one heat exchange and shortening the cooling connection.

Autonomous driving

Huawei says O&M automation, energy efficiency optimization, and operational autonomy are changing how data center operations and maintenance are managed. For example, it says that O&M automation enables engineers to complete the inspection of 2000 racks in 5 minutes remotely.

The energy efficiency optimization means an optimal cooling strategy can be delivered via 1.4 million original combinations within 1 minute, achieving smart cooling. In addition, the company says that the autonomy of the operation maximizes the value of resources.

Trustworthy

Huawei says proactive security and secure architecture ensure the high quality and sustainable development of data centers. Proactive protection means using big data and AI technologies to implement predictive maintenance from components to data centers based on the visibility and perception of all domains in the data centers.

Secure architecture means security at different levels, such as components, devices, and systems. At the system level, the E2E visualizable, manageable, and auditable platform ensures that system availability reaches 99.999%. The company says automatic failure response takes just 1 minute to detect a failure, 3 minutes to analyze, and 5 minutes to recover.
